“It was hard for us to be serious,” says Gosling. “We are a couple of knuckleheads who made this comedy and thought it would be fun to work together again and then we had to try and be serious.”Gangster Squad is based on Paul Lieberman’s non-fiction book that recounts the violent measures adopted by the LAPD to rid the city of mobster Mickey Cohen.
"During a recent L. A. interview, director Ruben Fleischer says that Gosling and Stone provide a human face to the grim proceedings in the stylized shoot ‘em up. ”They are looking for a way out and each finds a kindred spirit in the other,”
Ryan plays Sgt. Jerry Wooters, a real life LAPD officer. He's described as a tough-as-nails cops assigned to do what’s necessary to eliminate the ruthless Mickey Cohen. Emma Stone plays the fictional Grace Faraday, a failed-actress-turned-Cohen-moll who falls for Gosling’s cop and gets caught in between.
"Stone’s Grace is fictional, but she understands her misplaced ambitions and the shock of recognition she feels. “Grace moved to Hollywood to be a star, not an actress, but still failed” and might have to pay the price of great expectations."
“Ryan’s a real renaissance man,” Stone says. “He’s open and up for anything, so it makes him a great teammate."The pair had been lined up to play opposite each other again in the film "Focus" however they both were announced as no longer attached to the project at the same time. We can only hope they find another suitable film in which to co-star again!!
